Playgroup Granola Bars

Written by COA Nutrition Team On December 24, 2021

This is a great base for granola bars. Fresh out of the oven, they are chewy and firm, not too gooey nor too hard. They cool off to be crunchy and the flavors are wonderful! Make it your own by adding dry fruit, chocolate chips and nuts!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup wheat germ
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ cup apple sauce
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, add-ons (if any) and salt. Make a well in the center, and pour in the syrup, egg, apple sauce and vanilla. Mix well using your hands. Pat the mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  3. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until the bars begin to turn golden at the edges. Cool for 5 minutes, then cut into bars while still warm. Do not allow the bars to cool completely before cutting, or they will be too hard to cut.

Planning Ahead Tip of the Month

Yes, you should get an air fryer!

There are a lot of questions popping out when it comes to this latest kitchen craze. Is it worth buying an air fryer? Here are some reasons why we think so: • Easy to clean • Easy to use • Safe to use • Healthier meals • Doesn’t take up much space • Faster Than Oven Cooking An air fryer is an incredibly easy way to cook just about anything. You place the food in a fryer-style basket and hot air rapidly circulates all around the food, making the food crisp – much like deep-frying, but without the oil. You can cook anything you’d make in the oven. So, yes, DO IT!
